The white lines on the highway, the blacktop in between
On the 20 heading east towards the coast
A traveller mug of coffee my constant best friend
Driving through today and tomorrow
The radio plays CBC ideas for your mind
The river by my side sinks to the sea
Another hour closer, one more further away
From everything that matters
We live our lives at anxious speed, afraid to miss a chance
Days flash like markings on the road
The paper's full of tragedy, the TV news is bleak
We're choking on our self-inflicted woes
We race toward the future never thinking to look back
And wish away the present as we go
Another hour closer, one more further away
From everything that matters
I wonder what I'm chasing down as I try to outpace anticipation
The times I've been disgraced looking for something or someplace or simply patience
It's easy to be swept along and follow all the latest fascinations
Become something I'm not so I can satisfy unreal expectations
Day falls into evening, evening yields to night
Images pass shimmering like ghosts
The racers on the road looking for homes they know well
Are captured by the off-ramps one by one
The full moon and the highbeams shine a light on where to go
Deserted highway's here for me alone
Another hour closer, not long before I reach
Everything that matters
On the 20 heading east towards the coast
A traveller mug of coffee my constant best friend
Driving through today and tomorrow
