The fields where we loved when we were eighteen
Are long since ploughed under and paved
But the memories stay like the last light of day
There was nothing much else we could save
In an upscale hotel in a New Jersey town
With our clothes strewn about us in haste
We were lovers at last but you had a past
And you wouldn't let me have his place
You deceived me with truth - I deceived you with lies
Can you say which of us was worse?
Your life was in fetters - mine wasn't much better
And not at all what I'd rehearsed
If you'd had the conviction of the thoughts you ignored
I'd have had the courage to pull you away
If I'd known I was dreaming of a woman you're not
I'd have told you goodbye on the very first day
At one time illusions were all I had left
I don't even have those any more
The mist blew out to sea and uncovered me
And they were was gone as you'd gone before
Are long since ploughed under and paved
But the memories stay like the last light of day
There was nothing much else we could save
In an upscale hotel in a New Jersey town
With our clothes strewn about us in haste
We were lovers at last but you had a past
And you wouldn't let me have his place
You deceived me with truth - I deceived you with lies
Can you say which of us was worse?
