Redtails

Redtails are hanging in cerulean blue
Gravity flouted as they search for prey
I'm on the road to a chain hotel
Pictures on the walls, the same in ev'ry room

Memories flood like swollen rivers
Cars glut roads and parking lots
I spent a third of my life here with nothing to show
'Cept friends who forgot me or was it I who forgot?

You can never go back, at least not from here
The pavement is cracked. The path's overgrown
Ragweed in the ditches, loosestrife in your mind
Like alien thoughts on familiar ground

You can throw out the letters but never the words
They're hard-cast in mem'ry as wind etches stone
So edit the pages but keep all the lines
Believe what you will in your version of truth

Tomorrow they're calling for an all-day rain
It's good for the gardens, good for the fields
The redtails won't fly. Their food's gone to ground
And the rain on my face is as light as your kiss.
